Three things I’ve learnt as a new mum that no one could teach me.

We caught up with our Head Trainer Julia and asked about the three things she has learned since becoming a new mum!

Being a new mum to my first child (Jack) has been a wonderful yet challenging experience, filled with surprises and unexpected lessons. While there is no shortage of advice and information available, there are some things that can only be learned through personal experience. Here are three things that I, as a new mum, have learned that no one could have taught me.

1. Power of a mothers intuition

One of the first things I’ve learned is the power of a mother’s intuition. In the early days, I’d often second guess myself as there is a lot of conflicting information out there for new mums.

I found that listening to my gut and making decisions based on what felt right for Jack was the best way to navigate the challenges of motherhood. Every baby is different, and what works for one may not work for another. I have to remind myself that I know him best and to go with my gut feeling.

2. Loss of independence can be jarring at first

This is the first time that someone has been completely reliant on me, physically and emotionally. I knew that my new baby would be dependent on me, however, this was at a new level that I couldn’t have prepared for.

In order for me to be a great mum I need to keep up my self-care, such as exercise or catching up on sleep. I’ve learned to grab opportunities when they arise or to communicate with my support team when I need help. This brings me to my final point..

3. Your support system is key

I learned that there’s a difference between having a support system and feeling supported by that support system! Yes, there are people I can call upon but often people don’t know what type of support you need unless you communicate how they can help. For example, in the early days, I didn’t need Jack to be held, I needed help with washing, dinner prep, etc.

I feel incredibly grateful and lucky to be a mum and I hope by sharing my recent learnings I can encourage new mums to embrace the journey of motherhood, remind them to trust their instincts, and advocate for themselves as they navigate this exciting, yet challenging, time in their lives.
